Ramsey Rule

Ramsey Rule

Ramsey is a Digital Media artist who lives and works in the Memphis area. Born in East Tennessee, Ramsey studied at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he received his first Bachelors degree in Anthropology. He discovered his research interest lay in media studies -- film, art, and new media -- and their expression and reflection of sociocultural factors. He furthered this interest by earning a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Digital Media Design at the Memphis College of Art. His creative endeavors include writing, videography, animation, and sound art. His thesis piece was a soundscape entitled Suffused. He currently works in the Bartlett area in Marketing.

Matthew Paul Olmos

Matthew Paul Olmos was born and raised in Los Angeles to a police officer and Labor/Delivery nurse. He moved to New York in August 2001 to pursue playwriting.

He is a three-time Sundance Institute Fellowship/Residency recipient (2014 Lab, 2013 UCROSS, 2009 Time Warner Storytelling Fellow), National Latino Playwriting Awardee from Arizona Theatre Company, Baryshnikov Arts Center Resident Artist, Princess Grace Awardee in Playwriting and was named by Sam Shepard as the inaugural recipient of the La MaMa e.t.c.'s Ellen Stewart Emerging Playwright Award.

Dramatists Guild Fellow, New York Theatre Workshop Fellow; Primary Stages Dorothy Strelsin New American Writer's Group playwright; Brooklyn Arts Exchange Resident Artist, INTAR H.P.R.L playwright, Rising Circle Collective writer, terraNOVA Collective playwright, and is a Ensemble Studio Theater lifetime member.

A two-time Resident Artist at Mabou Mines/Suite (mentored by Ruth Maleczech/Terry O'Reilly); awarded “Top Prize of the Americas” by the BBC 2011 International Playwriting Competition for his play The Nature of Captivity; published by Samuel French.

Awarded the Sundance Institute Time Warner Storytelling Fellowship for his play i put the fear of mexico in’em (published by Samuel French) which world-premiered in Chicago at Theater with A View/Teatro Vista. It has also been developed and/or presented by INTAR Theatre, The Working Theatre, LaMicro, Lark Play Development Center, The Kennedy Center with The Inkwell, and the Gala Theatre in DC. It was also the 2012 Repertorio Español’s MetLife Nuestras Voces 3rd Place Winner and on the syllabus at a Rutger’s University course taught by Caridad Svich. It is also published by NoPassport Press.

Sam Shepard named him the inaugural recipient of La MaMa e.t.c. Ellen Stewart Emerging Playwright Award, for which La MaMa produced his play so go the ghosts of méxico, part one, the first in his 3-play cycle about the U.S./Mexico drug wars. Directed by The Public Theater's Director of Devised Theater Initiative and Under the Radar Director Meiyin Wang, the production played a sold-out run and was a New York Times Critic's Pick. It will soon be published by Samuel French and NoPassport Press. The Spanish version of the play has premiered in México and premiered Repertorio Español, NYC in 2014.

Holds an M.F.A. in Playwriting from The Actor’s Studio Drama School (now New School for Drama), a B.A. in Playwriting from UC Santa Barbara, and was given UCLA’s GOP Award for Graduate Playwriting. He was the co-founder and former Artistic Director of woken’glacier theatre company (two-time New York Innovative Theatre Award nominee), a member of NoPassport, a National Endowment for the Arts New Play Development reader, a New York Innovative Awards judge, selection committee member for Lark Play Development Center's Playwrights’ Week and Playwrights of New York (PoNY) Fellowship.

A regular essayist to The Brooklyn Rail's In Dialogue series, where he has written essays published on the work of Carla Ching, Kristoffer Diaz, Young Jean Lee, Dominique Morisseau, Tommy Smith, Saviana Stanescu, and Lloyd Suh. He is a regular essayist for New York Theatre Review, where he has written pieces ranging from the work of Belarus Free Theatre, Under the Radar, The TEAM, The Assembly as well as other downtown theater artists.

He is currently working on a devised piece tentatively titled AMERICAN NATIONALISM project with director Luke Harlan and designer Nick Benacerraf, which was recently developed through New York Theatre Workshop’s Adelphi Residency. He is also in development on two historical plays involving the assassination of John F. Kennedy, called THE SHOOTERS OF AN AMERICAN PRESIDENT; as well a piece on E. Howard Hunt’s involvement in the Watergate scandal.

Sometimes you come across a script that deserves to be read twice. And sometimes you come across one that stakes out territory in your brain and lives there for a good long while, demanding to be revisited, pondered, dissected, and savored.

Such is the case with The Nature of Captivity, so I'm especially glad that playwright Matthew Paul Olmos sent it my way during one of Chatterbox's open calls for script submissions. He told me that he thought the play, originally written for the stage, was a natural fit for audio. I agree, and I'm proud he entrusted it to Chatterbox.

I'm also proud that another open call -- for performers -- yielded an incredibly strong cast of two returning Chatterboxers and two new ones. Over the five-night recording process, we dug deep into this script, trying to consider every facet of the remarkably fleshed-out world it contains. The process was exciting and gratifying, and I thank the cast for their thoughtfulness, energy, and bravery.

Thankfully, most of us will never know what it means to live in a world like the one depicted in The Nature of Captivity, a brutal colonialist nightmare in which there is little hope of escaping the invaders, much less repelling them. Thing is, we do live in that world. Nellie, Justus, Lulu, and Gooch could stand for any number of individuals or groups who have been threatened with extinction for the crime of being in the way.

I hope their story sticks with you, as it has with me, and I hope experiencing it prompts us to reflect on how we treat others, especially those we mistakenly consider "other." To paraphrase Lulu, there is no "us and them" in this world, not really -- there's only us.

Anne Hogan

Anne is a proud Memphian who grew up acting in productions throughout the community. Her love for theatre led her to UT Martin where she received a BFA in Performing Arts. She continued her education at Christian Brothers University, receiving a Masters degree in Elementary Education. Anne lives in East Memphis with her husband, Ben, where she is a teacher at Holy Rosary School. She continues to work in the theatre community by teaching classes at Playhouse On the Square and tries to get herself on stage as often as possible. As Anne likes to say, “Sometimes I teach. Sometimes I act. Sometimes I teach acting.”

Anne’s all-time favorite productions include To Kill A Mockingbird, Little Shop of Horrors, A Midsummer’s Nights Dream, Lysistrata, and The Matchmaker.
